Curriculum
St. Bernard School is a K3 through 8th grade Catholic school. Daily prayer and weekly liturgy are an integral part of the curriculum. Our program is characterized by a consistent emphasis on a strong core curriculum typical of effective schools.
Our K3 program (3 year old kindergarten) meets in the mornings (2,3, or 5 days per week). The focus is on school readiness. Children learn through physical, creative and cognitive activities. Religion, music, art, and play are an important part of this curriculum.
Our Junior Kindergarten or K4 is a half day afternoon program (5 days per week). This program has more structure than the K3 curriculum. Reading readiness, math, religion, science, social studies, art, music and physical education are included in the K4 program.
Senior kindergarten, K5, is a full day (5 day per week) program and includes religion, reading, math, science, language arts, social studies, music, art, physical education and computer.
Primary grades emphasize reading, math and writing. Other core subjects are taught as well. At this level, children are prepared for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. This level includes a Learning Resource Center, which enhances individual growth.
Our Middle School continues development in core subjects. Religion remains an important part of the curriculum. Science and technology assume a more dominant role. Literature and Spanish are added to meet the student's growing interests and abilities. Algebra is designated as the math course for 8th grade.
Generally, St. Bernard graduates move on to attend Divine Savior Holy Angels, Marquette University, Pius XI and Wauwatosa East High Schools.
